Having a Cousin as a Best Friend

When you visit family that you haven’t seen in a while, you normally all sit down together, get something to eat, and talk for hours about everything that’s been happening in their life. For a lot of people my age this can be boring and drawn out, when you would rather just be sitting on your phone. But it’s not when you have a bunch of cousins your age!

This weekend I went to Iowa to visit my family, and I’m fortunate enough to have a lot of cousins my age. Now that all of us are getting older, I’m starting to realize how important it is to spend time with them before everything changes. So, here are 10 reasons why having a cousin as a best friend is such a special thing:

1. You have a life time of memories together.

You guys have literally known each other from the moment you were born! You can think of so many “Remember when…” or “Like that time we…” stories, that basically half of your conversations involve laughing about the past.

2. They already know everything about you.

Since you’ve already known each other your whole life, they know all the little details about you too. They know what will annoy the crap out of you, what can make you laugh, and what embarrassing stories to bring up that’ll make you turn bright tomato red. It’s both a blessing and a curse.

3. They don’t judge your mistakes.

They know some pretty personal things about you. You know that no matter what you do, they are still going to support you 100%. Both of you have done some gasp-worthy things that you want to erase from history. Having someone there to comfort you instead of judge you is something you can’t put a price on.

4. They are like your personal diary.

If they live in a different city or state, and don’t know anyone that you are talking about, it’s time to let it ALL out. Go ahead and talk about how much you hate Randy, and talk for a half hour about how you can’t stand that new person all your friends are obsessed with. You both take turns venting and listening to each other, and leave knowing that your information is safe with them.

5. You can be yourself around them.

You might be completely different people! You could both share absolutely nothing in common, and if you weren’t related probably would never speak to each other. But since you are related, none of that matters and you let your full personality show with them. Or you could both have the same personality and interests, and then it’s like talking to a mirror of yourself.

6. They are your partner in crime.

It’s almost like you were both born to stir up trouble at a family get together. Somehow playing tag, hide and go seek, or House always ended with someone crying and you both getting blamed. Ah good times.

7. It’s never awkward.

The last time you saw each other was a year ago. Yet you can both start talking like it’s only been a week. There’s never any silent awkward moments, because there is only so much time you have to talk about everything you have missed.

8. They are another brother or sister.

You grew up together, share childhood memories, know probably more information about them than you should, and have little fights occasionally. Just like you and your best friends swear that you have to be related, you and your cousin(s) swear you must be siblings.

9. You never get sick of each other.

Whether you see them every day or once a year, you both always have something new to talk about, see, or do.

10. They will always be there for you.

Every relationship has its ups and downs whether that’s with a parent, sibling, friend, significant other, or cousin. You have both seen each other change and grow throughout the years. You know that no matter how hard it gets they will always be there for you in the end. Cousins are truly the best friend that never leaves.
